Although there is a growing Muslim population in Red Deer a great majority of them are Muslim refugees that have relocated in hopes of a better future for themselves and their loved ones. Due to that fact, we are unable to sustain the ever-mounting costs of running a masjid on a rental model.

We were able to secure a property to help move towards a self-sustaining model for the asking price of $1.8M. We are currently tenants of that building and continue to pay our rent. However, we put $250K last year as a deposit towards the purchase of the building under the condition that we can pay the full price of the building within 3 years or less.

In the meantime, the rent we pay does not go towards the purchase of the building. That is a huge financial burden for us right now as the rental model is not self-sustaining and has not worked for us in the past.
Islamic Relief has offered us a $50K match should we be able to raise $100K. That will make a great difference for us as it will help us inch closer to owning our own Masjid In shaa Allah.

This is where you come in, by sharing our campaign and contributing what you are able to will make a great impact and be of great help and service to the Red Deer Muslim community.

Challenges
Our Masjid is not just in the downtown area of Red Deer but also a 3-minute drive off of HWY 2 (a major highway that connects Alberta north to south).

In the last few years we have been forced to relocate 3x and we really want to be able to make this building into a permanent home for our masjid Al Furqan.
The first time we were boycotted out of a predominantly Christian neighbourhood and they were adamantly against having one of the commercial properties be turned into a local Masjid.
The second time we didn’t have enough parking space to accommodate the local Muslim community for Friday prayers and it caused a lot of complaints from the neighbours as cars caused congestion on the roads.
The third time (hopefully our last time for the time being) is the place we are currently renting and hoping to own by buying out the building to help us not be at the mercy of any landlord or neighbours

This building once we own it, the rent we receive from the tenants in the building will help cover the masjid and learning centre’s cost of running and alleviates the burden of perpetual unsurmountable operating costs of rent. It will give us the solid ground we need to build the foundation for Masjid Al-Furqan Learning Centre.
